New frailty prevention guidelines may be important for falls prevention

Published

Research from Quensland concerned with facilitating better frailty prevention (frailty is estimated to impact more than  20 per cent of Australians  aged over 65) includes a framework of six key pillars: health promotion and screening, nutrition, exercise, social activities, medicine optimisation, management of severe frailty. Frailty is a risk factor for falls, and management of frailty is crucial for ongoing prevention for decrease of mobility and other impacts of falls. However, the research found that undertreatment of frailty is common, it recommends that "it is important for people experiencingfrailty to minimise sedentary time and engage in a range of domestic and recreational activities, as their level of frailty allows." This management of appropriate level of physical challenge is possibly an important consideration for any home modifcations.
