Cowra Japanese Garden amenity and accessibility boost

Published

A $250,000 NSW Government upgrade has been announced for the Cowra Japanese Garden. It is the largest Japanese garden in the southern hemisphere attracting an estimated 50,000 visitors each year from both Australian and overseas. FOr context, during World War II Japanese citizens were interreo in Cowra, and these gardens were designed to be a symbol of goodwill and reconciliation.

This newly announed Crown Reserves Improvement Fund grant to Cowra Shire Council is intended to help fund amenity and accessibility upgrades. These changes will include an upgraded entry pathway to deliver inclusive access, and the current restroom facilities will be relocated and rebuilt.

Construction is scheduled for the first half of 2026, with the gardens staying open during construction. The anticipated finish date for the upgrades is before September 2026 in time for the Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival), – a tradition symbolising renewal and new beginnings.
