Alzheimer's Australia 15th National Conference

 IMPORTANT PROGRAM CHANGE
CONFERENCE OPENING AND KEYNOTE PRESENTATION NOW BEGINNING 5-00PM, TUESDAY 14TH MAY

Invitation to our 2013 National Conference from Ita Buttrose, National President, Alzheimer’s Australia

I am delighted to invite you to the Alzheimer’s Australia 15th National Conference in Hobart, Tasmania.

The theme of our conference, The Tiles of Life – Colouring the Future, challenges participants to reflect on their experience of living with dementia and how to stretch their thinking about the condition, and how best we can care for people living with dementia.

I’ve been National President of Alzheimer’s Australia for just over two years. It has been a challenging, rewarding journey. Through our Fight Dementia Campaign we’ve heard the stories of people with dementia and their family carers, and gained valuable insights into the impact of dementia within the community. It is an experience I will never forget.

It greatly saddens me when people with dementia tell me how they feel about the stigma of dementia. As a community, we seem to lack the sensitivity that’s needed to understand how much harm our society does to people with dementia – not  just because of stigma, but also through a health and care system that all too often is indifferent to the needs of people with dementia and their carers.

This year’s conference is an opportunity to reflect on how we can be positive in addressing dementia through promoting awareness, rehabilitation, social engagement, opportunities for creativity and self-expression.

It’s also an opportunity to look to the future and the critical role investment in dementia research can play in identifying the cause of dementia as well as helping to find a cure and developing new treatments.

For anyone interested in improving the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers – and looking to a better future – this is a conference you shouldn’t miss in 2013.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes

Ita Buttrose, AO, OBE
President
