Access Changing Places public facilities with Companion Card

Published

NDS has launched a free offer of Master Locksmiths Association Keys (MLAK) to all WA Companion Card holders to allow people with disability to unlock a national network of toilet facilities.

The Honourable Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister for Disability Services, announced the offer at a special event at BP The Lakes, Western Australia’s first privately-funded Changing Place facility.

A Changing Place is an accessible and customised public bathroom for people who cannot use universal access toilets. The facility includes a ceiling hoist, adult changing table, secure automatic door and space for two support people.

The key and locking system ensures the Changing Place facilities are safe and secure when not in use, and are available to those who need them.

There are about 200,000 Australians with disability who require assistance to meet their bathroom and personal hygiene needs. Without appropriate public facilities, their options are limited and their opportunities to actively participate in community life are restricted.

NDS in WA is calling on our members to assist in engaging with WA Companion Cardholders you support to ensure they have considered the MLAK offer and have support to take up the offer if required.

Disability sector organisations and other eligible parties can purchase MLAKs through the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia. More information on purchasing an MLAK is available here.

People with disability who require Changing Places and are not Companion Card holders can apply for a free MLAK on a case-by-case basis. Information on how to apply is available by calling 9242 5544 or emailing .
