WORKSHOP: Ramps and Rails - Townsville (NT/QLD)

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Attendees will be provided with information on basic principles for the design of ramps, some examples of barriers and solutions including information on alternatives to ramps, detail about grabrail prescription and the latest research in the area, and information on resources to assist practice.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

The workshop aims to provide occupational therapy practitioners with:

• Knowledge about broad principles for designing internal and external ramps for domestic homes
• Practical information on the process of measuring up areas for the design and installation of internal and external ramps
• Information about resources to assist with measuring and designing ramps
• Information about current literature and research influencing the prescription of grabrails
• Knowledge about the biomechanics and measurement techniques to inform clinical reasoning processes for grabrail prescription
• Information about resources to assist with prescribing grabrails and handrails
• Knowledge about the relevance and application of the Australian Standards, the Disability Discrimination Act and the Premises Standards for grabrail, handrail and ramp design in domestic environments
• Opportunity to discuss and problem solve case scenarios from their own work setting.

OUTCOMES

• Enhanced knowledge about principles for ramp design and grabrail prescription.
• Enhanced knowledge about products and solutions to address typical barriers in the home for a range of people with diverse needs.
• Enhance current knowledge about home modification practice in the specific areas listed.

• Novice to expert clinicians practicing in home modifications
