Prescriber Education in Assistive Technology

The following assistive technology (AT) education sessions are available to EnableNSW eligible prescribers. All sessions are facilitated by EnableNSW Statewide Clinical Advisors in partnership with suppliers and clinical educators.

Face to face sessions are held at the EnableNSW Equipment Centre, Homebush unless otherwise specified. 

Education sessions and learning outcomes

Online:

These modules provide an overview of EnableNSW programs, eligibility and the application process specific to each program. Module 1 provides a general overview, however prescribers are expected to complete further modules relevant to the program area they work in, as a pre-requisite for attendance at prescriber education sessions. This requirement will be included in the e-mail confirming attendance at other AT sessions.

Face to face:

Power Conversion for Manual Wheelchairs

This session focuses on an overview of the types of power conversion options for manual wheelchairs available for independent mobility and attendant control. Participants will have an opportunity to trial manual wheelchairs with power conversion during the practical session.

Participants will learn:

  • What to consider when prescribing a manual wheelchair with power conversion
  • The range of power conversion options available
  • Which wheelchairs interface with which power conversion option
  • The specifications and features of power conversion options available on the NSW Government Contract 217B.

Bathing Showering and Toileting Equipment

This session focuses on equipment provided through the EnableNSW Equipment Allocation Program (EAP) and available on the NSW Government Contract 217B. A supplier has been invited to provide updated information on products listed in the 217B Contract.

Participants will learn:

  • The specifications and features of the bathing / toileting equipment available through the Equipment Allocation Program (EAP) and on the NSW Government Contract 217B
  • What to consider when prescribing bathing, showering and toileting equipment
  • How to make simple adjustments to suit an individual’s anthropometrics.

Medical Grade and Custom Footwear

The sessions are suitable for people unfamiliar with EnableNSW or new to footwear prescription.

Participants will learn:

  • What to consider when prescribing medical grade footwear
  • The different specifications and features of prefabricated and customised footwear
  • Tips for assessment and the process when requesting footwear through EnableNSW

Manual Wheelchair & Pressure Cushions

This session provides an overview and a hands on experience of the standard manual wheelchairs available through the EnableNSW Equipment Allocation Program (EAP). A supplier has been invited to provide up-to–date information on the latest wheelchair models and to lead a discussion around advanced wheelchair set-up.

Participants will learn:

  • What to consider when prescribing a manual wheelchair
  • The specifications and features of the manual wheelchairs available through EAP
  • What is the difference between standard and customised manual wheelchairs and the features and accessories available
  • How to take basic seating/wheelchair measurements
  • How make simple adjustments to a standard manual wheelchair  to suit an individual’s anthropometrics

Beds, Pressure Care and Mattresses

This session focuses on the range of beds and mattresses available through the EnableNSW Equipment Allocation Program (EAP) and available on the NSW Government Contract 217A. A supplier has been invited to provide updated information on products listed in the 217A Contract.

Participants will learn:

  • To identify pressure injury stages and gain an understanding of different pressure risk assessment scales
  • The different features of the beds and mattresses available from EAP and on the NSW Government Contract 217A
  • What to consider when prescribing beds and mattresses, including pressure injury risk and safety concerns.

Transfer Aids

This session focuses on the range of hoists, slings and other transfer aids available through the EnableNSW Equipment Allocation Program (EAP) and available on the NSW Government Contract 217B. A supplier has been invited to provide updated information on products listed in the 217B Contract.

Participants will learn:

  • The specifications and features of the transfer aids available through the Equipment Allocation Program (EAP) and on the NSW Government Contract 217B
  • What to consider when prescribing lifting and standing hoists
  • What to consider when prescribing slings to suit an individual’s needs.

Powered Mobility (including power wheelchairs and scooters)

This session focuses on commonly prescribed powered mobility and will include a practical session. An equipment supplier has been invited to provide up-to-date information on the latest power wheelchair models and compatible seating, and lead a discussion on advanced powered mobility set-up.

Participants will learn:

  • The process for applying for power wheelchairs and scooters through EnableNSW
  • How the different drive wheels and set-up of power wheelchairs can alter performance
  • What to consider when prescribing powered mobility
  • What to consider when prescribing seating for power wheelchairs
  • The specifications and features available for powered mobility

Self-Care and Mobility for Regional and Rural Prescribers

This session provides an overview and a hands on experience of the self-care and mobility equipment available through the EnableNSW Equipment Allocation Program (EAP) and from NSW Government Contracts. This session will also include information about how EnableNSW interfaces with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Participants will learn:

  • What to consider when prescribing standard off-the-shelf, self-care and mobility equipment
  • The different specifications and features of Stock equipment including manual wheelchairs, beds and mattresses, pressure cushions, bathing and toileting equipment, and transfer aids
  • How to make simple adjustments to the equipment
  • Maintenance and care of the equipment - educating clients and their family / carers.

 

Teleconferences:

Updated Footwear and Orthoses Criteria

The teleconference sessions will provide an introduction to the updated clinical criteria for Lower Limb Orthoses and Pedorthic Footwear and will describe what has changed in the criteria following the recent review.
