When individuals receive home care, they may be dealing with physical health issues, chronic illnesses, disabilities, or aging-related concerns. Addressing their mental health alongside these physical aspects ensures that they receive comprehensive care, leading to improved overall well-being. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported in 2019 that 1 in 5 people aged 65 and over reported levels of psychological distress and 1 in 10 reported high or very high levels.
Home care providers often talk with LPA about the increased presence of mental health-related needs amongst their consumers. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic providers increased their focus on consumer’s health and well-being. The future in-home support program is expected to include a clinical care and specialised support service type with heightened responsibilities for on-going monitoring of consumer’s health care needs including mental health. Overview
This training course aims to enhance the understanding of mental health conditions, promote effective care, and provide practical strategies for effective mental health care in the home. The training course is designed to equip home care workers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively support clients with mental health issues in a home care setting; and to provide insight into the organisational capability required for the provision of this care.

This course will be useful for a wide range of participants with an interest in building their organisations mental health care and support capability. This includes anyone with responsibility for oversight and management ofhome care programs, in particular executive and operational leaders; those with responsibility for the quality and effectiveness of care especially quality managers and clinical care managers; those responsible for workforce capability, especially HR managers; and any staff who may be involved in the provision of care and support to consumers with mental health needs, including case managers, Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses and allied health professionals.
