Inclusive housing: Who is responsible?
Speaker: Margaret Ward
Background:
Public buildings and spaces must now be accessible for people with disability.
Do we need similar access in private housing?
Governments are reluctant to regulate, the housing industry says it will respond if buyers want inclusive housing, and the average buyer currently doesn't see the need. So who is responsible and what will it take for neighbourhoods to be truly inclusive of everyone?
This conversation is for people interested in talking about and getting clearer about how to support people with disability in ways more likely to deliver good lives in community and how inclusive housing contributes to that task.
Margaret Ward has been an architect, public servant and advocate for the inclusion of all citizens. Much of her working life, Margaret has advocated for the adoption of housing design which includes everyone regardless of age and ability.
Margaret was inaugural convenor of the Australian Network for Universal Housing Design and the Queensland Action for Universal Housing Design.
