IDeA Online Courses in Universal Design

These IDeA courses are constructed for advocates, builders and contractors, planners, architects, occupational and physical therapists, and policymakers. Our expert staff will give anyone interested in the universal design of places, products, and systems the foundation needed to recognize, understand, appreciate, apply, and advocate for universal design in their homes, offices, and communities. The courses address the principles and knowledge bases relevant to solving many design problems using case studies to demonstrate the value of universal design.

Online courses last 4-weeks (January 12 - February 8). Courses require about 15 hours of study during the 4-week window, including readings, videos, discussion, projects, and tests. There are no required sign in times so you can access the courses on your schedule. The course is asynchronous so there are no required sign in times. Students who complete all course materials will receive a certificate of completion for each course completed and a special certificate for completing all 11 courses. U.S. Architects will receive 15 hours of CEU credit (HSW) for completing qualifying courses.

Universal Design and Housing 2: Design Applications

This course provides tools and examples to help architects introduce accessibility and design for aging in place into new and existing communities without compromising aesthetic character and other design goals. The course provides resources for architects and urban designers to help them create accessible neighborhoods, blocks, lots, and homes. The course illustrates how the goals of universal design are compatible with the goals of developing livable, healthy, and sustainable neighborhoods. Examples demonstrate how universal design is possible in many different types of neighborhoods and housing forms, including traditional neighborhood and housing design.

Design and Public Transportation

Public transportation plays an important role in an inclusive community. This course examines strategies for introducing universal design in public transportation systems from terminals to vehicle design and addresses the broader issue of service design. It teaches best practices in providing information, accessible boarding, fare payment, and other elements of transit systems. Case studies highlight the benefits of a universal design approach to public transportation systems.

Design for Health, Wellness, and Social Participation

Health and wellness are generally accepted indicators of quality of life and well-being. They serve as the foundation of positive living. Good health allows individuals to engage in the community, interact with family and friends, and fulfill their potential, but a lack of social interaction can have a dehumanizing effect. Universal design practices and policies can eliminate barriers and offer innovative solutions to help facilitate and promote health, wellness, and social participation. This course will teach design solutions for injury and disease prevention, positive mental health, and ensuring access to resources.
