Is compliance with the Building Code of Australia - 04 stair design principles for staircases sufficient?

Last Updated

If stairs are unavoidable, builders should talk to owners about how the stairs might be adapted in the future. For instance, builders could ensure that the stairway designs have sufficient base to replace the stairs with a small residential lift at a later date; or the stair width and landing space is sufficient to be retro-fitted with a stair lift (stair climber) if required. The general staircase design principles are outlined in Your Home. More information about residential lifts and accessible stair design can be located in the HMinfo Research Library and Listserve. Additionally, the Independent Living Centre's 'Design & Building for Access & Safety' section may also be of assistance.
