Physical and Occupational Therapy in Geriatrics: Aging in the Designed Environment

Author: Christenson, M. A.
Type: Journal Article
Year: 1990

Abstract:

An older person's choice is generally to remain in their own home. So there is a need to assist the elderly to address age and disability related changes. The environment itself can be adapted to enhance independence. in the safest surroundings. This requires the occupational and physical therapist to develop new ways to assess outside and inside the home to identify hazards that can cause fires, falls, suffocation and poisoning. Assistive devices such as grab bars and handrails can eliminate a good deal of physical burden for the caregiver and provide a means for the older person to remain comfortably in his or her own home and maintain independence
