Abstract: 

Housing for the 21st century is changing. More than ever, it is necessary to design living space that meets the needs of all people, young, old, short, tall, disabled and able-bodied. There's an exciting design principle called Universal Design that helps achieve this objective. Using Universal Design and applying principles for affordable building techniques results in a product that serves a broad range of people.

This site also provides access to a multimedia CD that demonstrates the principles of universal design, as well as a video presentation and interactive flash program that allows users to navigate through the floor plans of a universally designed home and listen to a video explaining each aspect (this feature may take a while to load).

Cost-benefit Analysis of Ramps versus Lifts

Abstract: 

As an unprecedented research endeavour on economic comparison between ramps and lifts, this study aimed to investigate factors that affected their costs and benefits. Comparisons of the cost ranges of each alternative and relative benefits of one option over the other were also explored. This study employed a multi-strategy method. Firstly, a systematic literature review was conducted in order to identify variables that have relevance to the costs and benefits of ramps and lifts. Secondly, a preliminary cost estimation of various ramps and lifts was conducted using the latest versions of the cost guides, including the Rawlinsons Construction Cost Guide and the Cordell Housing Building Cost Guide. The research design is also based, for more realistic information, on case studies provided by the New South Wales Home Modification and Maintenance Services (HMMS).

The NSW Home Modification and Maintenance Services (HMMS) State Council is the peak organisation for the HMMS industry in New South Wales.

'Our vision for the site is that it serves as a practical source of information and a communication channel for home modification and maintenance service clients and their carers, as well as providing assistance and resources for service providers and other stakeholders. HMMS are part of the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program, and provide major and minor modifications and some maintenance work, for people who are frail aged, people with disabilities and their carers so they may live more independently in the community and remain living at home. The emphasis of the work is on access, safety and independence.'

A booklet produced in Sri Lanka that is intended to provide an overview of the accessible features required in Sri Lankan public buildings and public spaces. Images around Sri Lanka are included to demonstrate access issues as a result of poor design or modification, as well as appropriate design. The booklet utilises Sri lankan Standards where applicable.

Backyard Blitz - Accessible Playground at the Children's Hospital at Westmead

The Backyard Blitz website links to the Children's Hospital at Westmead project of an accessible playground. This playground was funded by the George Gregan Foundation and designed and built by Access Australia in conjunction with Fox Johnston Architects, Mirvac and Backyard Blitz.

The webpage displays images of the new playgground and describes the accessible design and low allergy plants that were used. At the bottom of the webpage there is a link to step-by-step construction details.
