Accessibility to the built environment affects a large number of people within society. It is accepted throughout the European Union that at any one time 15-20% of the population will have a significant level of disability of a temporary or permanent nature.

Engineers, planners, and designers have used Leonardo de Vinci’s ‘average man’ as a guideline for their work. It has become the basic model on which the majority of designs are based. Yet there is no such thing as the ‘average man’.

The NSW Home Modification and Maintenance Services (HMMS) State Council is the peak organisation for the HMMS industry in New South Wales.

'Our vision for the site is that it serves as a practical source of information and a communication channel for home modification and maintenance service clients and their carers, as well as providing assistance and resources for service providers and other stakeholders. HMMS are part of the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program, and provide major and minor modifications and some maintenance work, for people who are frail aged, people with disabilities and their carers so they may live more independently in the community and remain living at home. The emphasis of the work is on access, safety and independence.'

This summary bulletin has been put together as a result of legislation across many Australian states requiring that smoke alarms be installed in homes and places where people sleep. The summary bulletin has information on both Hard Wired and Battery-Powered Smoke Alarms and the main methods of smoke detection used.

Complete with diagrams suggesting possible alarm placement, the bulletin may assist consumers and home modification and maintenance providers to appropriately select and place the most suitable smoke detection system in their homes.
