Rural Home Modification: Overview and Policy Issues in Rural and Regional Australia

Abstract: 

This study is exploratory by nature, and aims to present comprehensive features of rural home modification in Australia.

Based on the findings, this report hopes to

• contribute to the identification of policy issues in home modification in rural areas,

• extract the policy implications for a wider application of home modification and

• recommend policy initiatives that promote age-friendly housing environments in rural areas through home modification.

 

Feedback and case examples on the issues are welcomed.

Dementia Care Australia (DCA) is an independent information and education organisation specialising in supporting people with dementia and their carers; be they family members, professional carers, employers or friends. Our mission is to change society's attitude to dementia to one of hope. NSW Home Modification and Maintenance State Council - NSW HMMS

Abstract: 

The NSW Home Modification and Maintenance Services (HMMS) State Council is the peak organisation for the HMMS industry in New South Wales.

'Our vision for the site is that it serves as a practical source of information and a communication channel for home modification and maintenance service clients and their carers, as well as providing assistance and resources for service providers and other stakeholders. HMMS are part of the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program, and provide major and minor modifications and some maintenance work, for people who are frail aged, people with disabilities and their carers so they may live more independently in the community and remain living at home. The emphasis of the work is on access, safety and independence.'
