Abstract: 

The purpose of this Factsheet is to help service providers and trades people select colours and colour combinations for the households of elderly and visually-impaired individuals.

This Factsheet supplements the HMinfo publication Industry Checklist: The application of colour and colour contrast in the home environment of the elderly and visually impaired individuals.

It highlights critical information about each item on the checklist. These are only a starting point and an understanding of basic construction principles, building codes and regulations is assumed.

Rural Home Modification: Overview and Policy Issues in Rural and Regional Australia

Abstract: 

This study is exploratory by nature, and aims to present comprehensive features of rural home modification in Australia.

Based on the findings, this report hopes to

• contribute to the identification of policy issues in home modification in rural areas,

• extract the policy implications for a wider application of home modification and

• recommend policy initiatives that promote age-friendly housing environments in rural areas through home modification.

 

Feedback and case examples on the issues are welcomed.

Colour - Industry Checklist Issue 2, 2009

Abstract: 

Changes in vision and colour perception usually start in the 20s and get worse with ageing. Most people over the age of 65 have age-related problems with vision and mobility which may affect their independence. Ageing eyes are slower to adapt to changes in light and often more light is required to identify objects. People with Alzheimer’s disease often have added difficulties. Research suggests that the effective use of colour is one strategy that can be used to assist the visually-impaired person to be independent.

This checklist should be read in conjunction with the HMinfo Clearinghouse document “Industry Factsheet: Using colour and colour contrasts to improve accessibility and safety in the homes of elderly and visually impaired people”
